What's new in MightyFax 3.0.

The main goal was to keep MightyFax simple to use and reliable - since these are the main reasons people tell us they purchase MightyFax - and increase usability.

Look and Feel

MightyFax now uses Windows XP themes if it finds itself running in Windows XP. If it is not running in Windows XP, it appears as a normal Windows program. See screenshot.

Fax Grid Popup Menus

Right-clicking a fax in the fax grid now pops up a context menu with several options, such as printing, editing, archiving, deleting etc. Two new options are:
"Information about Selected Fax" which gives all information about the current fax, and is printable, and "Export Selected Fax", which now supports multi-page TIFF format. See screenshot.

Fax grid Viewing and Searching Options

There are also new Viewing and Searching options for both the Outgoing and Incoming Fax grids.

Outgoing Fax Grid Viewing Options: At the top of the Outgoing Faxes tab are options which dictate which faxes are shown, and in what order. The first, View, selects to view All Outgoing Faxes, Only Unsent Faxes, Only Sent Faxes or Only Archived Faxes. the second, Sort By, selects the order in which outgoing faxes are viewed: Date Sent, Subject, or Recipient. See screenshot.

Outgoing Fax Grid Search: Clicking the Find button will present a dialog whereby you can search faxes by looking in the Subject field, Recipient field, or Fax Number field. The Find Next button continues the search after the initial match is found. See screenshot

Similar functionality exists for the Incoming Fax Grid.

Fax Log Printer

Select File > Print Fax Logs to print a report of faxes sent or received, including options for date range, type of fax and sort order. See screenshot of options and of preview.

Fax Log Cleanup

This has a completely new interface, and has options for Deleting, Archiving, and Unarchiving groups of faxes. See screenshot. Options include:

   All Before A Particular Date
   All Archived Faxes
   All That Have Been Sent
   All Faxes Meeting Certain Conditions..
   All Faxes
   All Incoming Faxes

Sending

Sending is overall the same - since it is very stable right now we did not feel it needed changing. If it works, don't fix it. See screenshot. A few new features:

Preferences # 7a now allows for modifying the fax header template. A Fax Header Line is the small line of text that is sent at the top of each fax page. The standard Fax Header Template used by MightyFax can be modified using a mix of text and "variables". You can even set it to blank - i.e. no fax header is sent.

MightyFax now records transmission time, and this is displayed in the Last Attempt field.

MightyFax will now attempt to overcome problems with problematic fax machines which do not acknowledge end of session (i.e. the fax was sent, but we got a 'fatal timeout' because the receiving end never ack'd it)

Receiving

Receiving faxes is overall the same - since it is very stable right now we did not feel it needed changing. If it works, don't fix it. New features:

Option to "Reset the modem between calls". Preferences Item #22b: When in receive mode, reset the modem between calls. Normally you should leave this unchecked, however if you experience one of the following, try checking this ON: (1). If the first fax received is OK, but subsequent faxes fail to receive -or- (2). If a failed receive fax causes subsequent incoming faxes to fail.

MightyFax will now attempt to save as many pages as it can, for an incomplete fax, when receiving. Previously the entire fax was discarded.

Improved Error Handling

MightyFax will now attempt to give very precise information when getting an error message during either sending or receiving of faxes. A much improved error message window will a) give you as much information about the error as possible and b) suggest specific changes to the configuration which it can implement automatically for you.

Improved Configuration

The Preferences screen now has a "Quick Recommendations" button, which tells MightyFax to make its best recommendations based on the modem you are using. A considerable effort went into reviewing our support database for the last 3 years to create a database of modems and what settings work best for them when sending or receiving. The "Help with Init Strings" window now also uses this same database of modems to determine the best modem initialization string for you modem.

Printing Faxes

There are certain problematic printers which we have encountered. The symptoms of these printers are printing blank pages when printing out either a received or outgoing fax. For these cases, on Preferences > Advanced check the "Use alternate method to print faxes" checkbox and this should relieve the problem.

The Print Fax dialog now allows choosing the printer with a Printer Setup button.

Editing Faxes

The Fax Edit screen has been completely redone. It now has four pages: Recipient Information (screenshot), Sender Information (screenshot), Fax Cover Sheet (screenshot) and Fax Pages (screenshot). The Fax Cover Sheet editing process is the same as before. The Fax Pages screen allows for limited editing of fax pages created with the printer driver, including appending pages from other faxes, and deleting specific pages from the fax.

Exporting

Exporting faxes is now done through a new interface, and supports multi-page TIFF exports. See screenshot.

Cover Sheets

Cover sheets now support greater than 1 page messages

Help File

The Help file has been completely overhauled, and should be much more "helpful" now. See screenshot.
